Abstracts
The focus of this text is on the fifth edition of the textbook from 1916, in which Arnold introduced
some novelties and completed some paragraphs. The textbook, Psychology for Secondary Schools, was
written by Croatian philosopher, university professor, and author Gjuro Arnold (Ivanec, 1853 – Zagreb, 1941).
It was first published in 1893 by order of the Croatian government and subsequently in 1895, 1898, 1905, 1916,
1920 and 1923. In this textbook, Arnold collected the experiences he gained while working as a teacher at the
Zagreb Gymnasium. The textbook is divided into four sections, apart from the ‘Introduction,’ ‘Appendices,’
and ‘Literature’: ‘Appearances Common to Soul and Body,’ ‘Lower Mental Creations,’ ‘Higher Mental Creations,’
and ‘Appearances of Human Will.’ The list of references at the end of the textbook reveals that Arnold
was very familiar with contemporary developments in psychology. It includes works by Wilhelm Wundt,
Theodor Lipps, Alfred Binet, Oswald Külpe, Herbert Spencer, Édouard Claparède, Gabriel Compayré, Hans
Gross, Bernard Perez, William Preyer, and William Stern. This textbook, one of the first psychology textbooks
in our country, provides a valuable insight into the changes in psychology at the beginning of the 20th
century. Psychology was a new science at the time, and it shows how these changes were incorporated into
our educational system.
