Abstracts
The high parenting requirements of children with disabilities make this group of parents, according
to the results of numerous studies, more vulnerable and susceptible to negative outcomes for subjective
well-being, mental and physical health. One of the most significant challenges for this group of parents
is formal employment and the harmonization of work and family role demands. However, the scarce results
of previous research on the relationship between factors in the work domain and the well-being of this
group of parents are inconsistent and raise additional questions. Therefore, the main goal of this review
is to present current information about the well-being of parents of children with disabilities, with special
emphasis on factors from the work domain that are underrepresented in this research area, especially when
it comes to domestic research.
The introductory part of the review paper presents current research on the well-being of parents of children
with disabilities, with special emphasis on the analysis of existing policies towards parents of children with
disabilities in the Republic of Croatia and the results of domestic research in this area. Furthermore, the main
framework of the paper is a review of previous, mostly foreign research that has addressed the relationship
between employment status and the well-being of parents of children with disabilities and research aimed
at reconciling work and family roles of employed parents of children with disabilities. The presented review
indicates that future research needs to integrate numerous individual, family, work-organizational, and social
factors to comprehend relevant demands and resources from different systems and their fit. The final part
of the paper provides an overview of the practical implications based on current theoretical and empirical
knowledge in the field and calls for the collection of empirical data on Croatian samples as a basis for further
development of policies and practices towards parents of children with disabilities.
